Call for Case Studies on Chinese Economic Coercion
2025-06-02
The Journal of Geoeconomics invites submissions of short case studies devoted to specific instances of economic coercion carried out by the authorities of the People’s Republic of China, or entities controlled by them, against foreign states or corporations. For this call, economic coercion refers to actual or threatened restrictions to imports or to exports of goods or services, or to inflows or outflows of revenues or payments, or to investment positions – with the ultimate aim of influencing, constraining, exploiting, or punishing the policies of a targeted state in either a short- or long-term perspective.
Case Study Requirements
Each Case Study should be devoted to one well-defined sequence of events. While recent incidents are of obvious interest, we welcome submissions addressing events that occurred at any time since 1992.
Final Submissions should be no longer than 2,500 words, and be:
- Empirical in nature, based on publicly verifiable sources, such as official statements, trade or financial data, media reports, legal records, or documentation from international organizations. Proper citation and access details for all sources must be included.
- Structured around a clear chronology of events, identifying the main actors, actions taken or threatened, and observable outcomes. Each case study must present the chronology of key events in the form of a table with two columns, the first column reporting the date in the DD-MM-YYYY format, the second column providing a brief description of the event.
- Analytically focused, highlighting the strategic logic behind the use (or threat) of economic tools against the targeted actor(s).
How to Submit & Key Dates
Submit a 100-word abstract by June 27, 2025 through the Journal’s submissions portal. Authors need to register with the Journal of Geoeconomics prior to submitting or, if already registered, can simply log in and begin the five-step process.
As this stage is for submitting abstracts only, please prepare to paste your abstract at step 1 ("submission details") and to also upload your abstract as a file at step 2 ("upload files"). Please go through all five steps of the process. Feel free to use placeholder text (e.g. "NA", "Later") in fields that are not relevant for an abstract submission.
Selected abstracts will be invited to submit full case studies by August 5, 2025.
Authors will receive a style guide to ensure consistency across contributions.
About the Case Studies series
The Case Studies series of the Journal of Geoeconomics is dedicated to concise empirical and fact-driven case studies of discrete geoeconomic decisions or events (such as coercive diplomacy, retaliatory sanctions, or economic pressure campaigns). The aim of the series is to build up a repository on geoeconomic events and incidents for further use by academics, professional analysts, and policymakers.
