Open Access and Article Processing Charges (APCs)
Open Access Policy
The Journal of Geoeconomics provides immediate open access to all published content. Articles are freely available upon publication without charge, embargo, or registration requirement.
Users may read, download, copy, distribute, print, search, link to, adapt, and otherwise reuse published articles for any lawful purpose, provided the terms of the applicable Creative Commons license are followed. This policy is consistent with the Budapest Open Access Initiative definition of open access and the Directory of Open Access Journals definition of open access.
Article Processing Charges (APCs)
The Journal of Geoeconomics publishes accepted submissions under a Gold Open Access model. Authors are encouraged to consult their institution, department, research office, library, funder, or open access publishing support program to determine whether APC support is available. Many universities, research institutions, libraries, and funders maintain open access funds or publication support mechanisms that may cover APCs in whole or in part. Authors may be able to use grant funds to cover publication costs. Authors should always review the open-access requirements and funding rules of their funder and institution before submitting.
For new manuscripts submitted on or after April 1, 2026, accepted articles are subject to the following introductory Article Processing Charge (APC) schedule:

APCs are charged only after an article has been accepted for publication. No payment is required at submission, and an author’s ability to pay has no influence on editorial assessment or publication decisions.
The Journal does not charge submission fees, editorial-processing fees, page charges, colour charges, figure charges, supplementary-material charges, or manuscript-withdrawal fees. There are no mandatory author charges other than the applicable APC stated above.
Where institutional or funder support is available, we can issue invoices directly to the author’s institution, library, department, funder, or other approved payment office. Authors should provide the relevant billing contact, purchase order requirements, tax or vendor information requests, and any institutional documentation needed for invoice processing.
Manuscripts accepted, submitted, or commissioned before December 31, 2025 as part of the Journal’s launch-period publication cohort were not subject to an APC and were published under the Journal’s Diamond Open Access launch policy.
The Journal also pursues external funding opportunities to support open access publication, special issues, APC waivers, indexing, dissemination, and the long-term sustainability of the Journal. Interested institutions, funders, partners, and sponsors are invited to contact the Journal to discuss potential support or collaboration.
APC Waivers and Reductions
The Journal of Geoeconomics is committed to ensuring that an author’s ability to pay does not determine whether meritorious work can be published.
Authors affiliated with institutions in Research4Life Group A countries are eligible for a full APC waiver, while authors affiliated with institutions in Group B countries are eligible for a 50% reduction.
Subject to available resources, the Journal may also grant partial or full waivers to authors who lack reasonable access to institutional, grant, library, employer, or other publication funding. Requests should normally be made during submission and before acceptance. They have no effect on peer review or publication decisions. The Journal may provide a 25%, 50%, or 75% reduction, a full waiver, or sponsored publication arrangement.
Open Access Licensing and Copyright
Articles are published under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution License. Certain funders mandate a particular type of CC license is used. Copyright in the article is vested with the Author under the terms of the Creative Commons. Creative Commons (CC) licenses play an important role in facilitating Gold Open Access publishing. Authors who publish with the Journal of Geoeconomics agree to the following terms:
- Authors retain copyright and grant the Journal right of first publication with the work simultaneously licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution License that allows others to share the work with an acknowledgement of the work's authorship and initial publication in the Journal of Geoeconomics.
- Authors are able to enter into separate, additional contractual arrangements for the non-exclusive distribution of the journal's published version of the work (e.g., post it to an institutional repository or publish it in a book), with an acknowledgement of its initial publication in the Journal of Geoeconomics.
Authors are permitted and encouraged to post their work online (e.g., in institutional repositories or on their website) prior to and during the submission process, as it can lead to productive exchanges, as well as earlier and greater citation of published work (See The Effect of Open Access).
